I Like It
All summer long there was no rain.
The sewers dried. They climbed inside.
Grass breathed dust when you walked on it,
So at night there were secret waterings
Up and down the block:
A hissing sound in the blackness
And water's different air, palpable.
Birds came back and made water-noises.
The beach was a different story.
The beach had plenty of water.
The waves drew back from shore
Like baleen and showed a glistening maw of sand.
His mom said, It's a miracle.
His dad said, It's like a trick.
His sister said, This is so boring.
The radio said, It's only
Rock and roll but I like it.
